Before You Invest in AI, Ask These 7 Customer Experience Questions

AI is already changing how customers interact with businesses.

Chatbots, voice assistants, AI powered self service and agent copilots are becoming part of the customer journey. With so many AI solutions available, it can be tempting to ask:

“Which AI tool should we invest in?”

Perhaps the better question is:

“What will this investment mean for our customers?”

Before signing that AI contract, there are six questions every organization should consider.

1. What customer problem are we trying to solve?

AI should solve a real customer problem, not simply be introduced because the technology is available.

If customers are struggling because of a broken process, unclear information or unnecessary steps, adding AI may not solve the underlying issue.

2. Is AI really the best solution?

Not every customer problem requires AI.

Sometimes the real problem is a poorly designed process, outdated information, inadequate staffing, or a confusing customer journey.

Automating a broken process does not fix it.

It simply allows customers to experience the broken process faster.

Before investing, ask: Could we solve this problem more effectively by redesigning the journey instead?

3. What will the experience feel like for the customer?

A successful AI implementation is not simply one that works technically.

It should be easy for customers to understand and use.

Consider: Is it easy to use? Does it understand customers? Does it reduce effort or create more?

4. Are our employees ready?

AI adoption does not only change technology. It changes jobs.

Agents may increasingly work alongside AI, review AI-generated responses, handle complex interactions, manage escalations, and support customers when automation fails.

That requires new skills. Before deploying AI, ask: Have we prepared our employees for the customers who will now interact with AI?

AI literacy, critical thinking, communication, empathy, escalation handling, and the ability to work alongside AI will become increasingly important.

Your employees need to be ready.

5. What happens when AI cannot help?

This question is often overlooked. When AI reaches its limits, does the customer get stuck, or can they seamlessly reach a human or another appropriate solution?

Every AI implementation needs a CX AI Exit Strategy, a clear path that moves the customer toward resolution when AI can no longer help.

6. How will we measure whether AI is improving the customer experience?

Response time and cost savings are important. But they are not enough.

An AI system can reduce contact-centre costs while simultaneously increasing customer frustration.

Before implementation, define customer-focused measures such as: Customer effort, First-contact resolution, Customer satisfaction, Abandonment, Repeat contacts, and Escalation rates.

The best AI investment starts with the customer.

Before asking what an AI tool can do, ask what your customers need.

Because the most advanced AI is not necessarily the best investment.

The best investment is AI that creates measurable value for the business without creating a worse experience for the customer.

At Elevate Smiles CX, we help organizations evaluate AI through the customer’s eyes, identifying friction, trust gaps, adoption risks and opportunities for improvement. We also equip customer facing teams with customized AI and Customer Experience training.
